You can easily spend a day here - there is the castle tour itself, special exhibitions and displays as well as the the twice daily Birds of Prey flying display in the the grounds.
Salzburg is an easy 70 minute journey by car and parking is right in the city centre.
When you are there you can spend a time exploring the Fortress high above the city, the Mirabella Gardens, Mozart's birthplace and residence, the Museum of Modern Art, the Steigl Brewery and the Hellbrunn Palace and Zoo. It is well worth getting the Salzburg Card if you you plant to visit a number of attractions.
Take the Schafberg Railway and enjoy the 360 degree panorama, the summer Rodelbahn, a ferry ride to Strobl or St. Gilgen or just enjoy a coffee or a beer sitting by the lakeside.
The spa town of Bad Ischl is just 25 minutes from Obertraun by car or train.
Home to the Kaiser Villa, the Katrin-Alm, the Eurotherme spa,
cafes, restaurants, markets and shops. The Friday morning market is not to be missed.
No trip to the area is complete without a day spent in Hallstatt.
The Salt Mine in Hallstatt is the oldest working saltmine in the world and the tour is a must for all visitors. It is open everyday from 12. April - 01. November. it is not necessary to book tickets in advance.
There is also a new viewing platform which gives fantastic views over, Hallstatt, the lake and towards Obertraun.
A whole day on the mountain is worthwhile - it means you have plenty of time to explore the caves, visitors centre, the 5 Fingers viewing platform as well as the many hiking trails on the mountain.
